Good morning. It's Tuesday, March 24. Eugene is in its spring-era sweet spot: a little more daylight, a little more whimsy, and a lot more "why not?" energy. From tiny curbside art surprises to new ways to play (or perform), the city is feeling usefully cheerful. Alright, here's today's edition of your Eugene Lowdown:
📰 LOCAL NEWS LOWDOWN
Downtown Meters, Now With Personality
Downtown Eugene has a quiet art takeover hiding in plain sight. After the city removed coin vaults from parking meters, Eugene artist Robert Bolman and sculptor Jud Turner started turning the empty holes into mini installations. Several hundred meters now feature pieces, with contributions from artists like Erin Williamson and Clay Space ceramics studio members.
Lane County Catches the Pickleball Bug
Pickleball is booming in Lane County, and Willamalane Park and Recreation District is meeting the moment with help from the Emerald Valley Pickleball Club. Monthly Tuesday classes (Pickleball 101, 102, and 103) at the Bob Keefer Center build skills and strategy, with eight dedicated outdoor courts available at Meadow Park. Costs are $65 in-district and $78 out-of-district.
Library Theater Lets Kids Steal Scenes
Make room on the stage (and in the stacks). A free interactive theater event featuring "The Wind in the Willows" lands at Eugene's Downtown Library on Friday, March 27, from 4:30 to 5:30 PM. Narrow Shoes Productions will read from the classic book, then lead an acting exercise so kids and tweens can jump into the performance.
