Good morning. It's Tuesday, June 23. Summer planning season is here: the kind that involves both community projects and figuring out what to do with Saturday. We've got an update on a growing Whiteaker food hub, plus a kid-focused celebration in Springfield. Alright, here's today's edition of your Eugene Lowdown.
A Bigger Hub for Bigger Help
Burrito Brigade is trading cramped quarters for a bigger Whiteaker home as it expands its low-barrier food hub and kitchen capacity. The nonprofit, which rescues surplus food for pantries and hot meals, plans to start renovations Wednesday, July 1, and hopes the kitchen is ready by Thursday, Dec. 31, if it can raise another $300,000.
Children's Celebration Returns Saturday
Summer gets its local kickoff Saturday at Children's Celebration at Island Park, where families can bounce on inflatables, catch live performers, build with bricks and meet animals. The free event runs 10 a.m.-2 p.m., with admission tied to a non-perishable food donation and shuttle service available from Booth Kelly.
